Rate Pressure Persists as Microsoft and Meta Diverge
The Fed held rates steady, but three dissents favored a hike. Microsoft offered clearer evidence of AI monetization, while Meta's costs and capital spending raised the cash-return hurdle.
Cautious and defensive
Executive summary
The policy decision did not remove tightening risk, and the earnings response showed that investors are applying a stricter test to AI spending: revenue growth alone is no longer enough.
01
Federal Reserve decision
The FOMC voted 9–3 to hold the federal funds target range at 3.50%–3.75%. Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari, and Lorie Logan favored a 25-basis-point increase.
The statement described economic activity as solid while inflation remained above the 2% objective. The chair preserved meeting-by-meeting flexibility rather than committing to a September action.
02
Market reaction
The Dow fell 2.2%, the S&P 500 declined about 1.5%, and the Nasdaq lost 1.7% in regular trading. After the decision, the two-year Treasury yield eased to roughly 4.23%, while the ten-year yield rose to about 4.66%.
Brent settled more than 7% higher above $88 a barrel, largely reflecting Middle East and supply risk rather than the Fed alone.
03
Microsoft and Meta
Microsoft reported $90 billion in revenue, 43% Azure growth, and $678 billion in commercial remaining performance obligations. The evidence linking AI demand to cloud revenue was comparatively clear, although capital spending remained high.
Meta's advertising engine remained strong, but legal expenses, restructuring costs, Reality Labs losses, and higher capital spending raised the required return on future AI investment.
What to watch
Confirmation checklist
- 01Core inflation and labor data
- 02Long-term yields and curve steepening
- 03AI revenue relative to capital spending
- 04Regular-session confirmation after after-hours moves
Conclusion
The Fed did not raise rates, but it did not eliminate the possibility of future tightening. In a high-discount-rate environment, companies with visible revenue, profit, and cash-flow conversion are likely to be treated differently from those asking investors to underwrite a longer payback period.
